Cigarette Racing 46' Rider Inspired by AMG SLS

At the 2010 Miami International Boat Show specialist powerboat makers Cigarette Racing, and Mercedes-Benz's performance division, AMG, showed off the result of their latest collaboration - the Cigarette Racing 46' Rider AMG powerboat.

The boat was developed through a joint effort between the two performance brands, and it is designed to celebrate not only Cigarette Racing's 40th anniversary, but also the introduction of AMG's latest and greatest vehicle, the SLS supercar.

Employees from both companies paid visits to each other's facilities in order to gain insight into each others practices. The Cigarette Racing team were able to learn about new high-tech painting techniques and the latest engineering processes and materials. All of this knowledge was poured into the 46' AMG boat.

The styling of the powerboat took some of its inspiration from the SLS supercar. The paintwork is a hand-applied AMG ALUBEAM silver - one of the standard options for the SLS. This process, used exclusively by AMG, covers body surfaces like a metallic skin, targeting light reflections to further emphasize exterior character lines and design details. Showcasing the state of the art nanotechnology, this unique finish imbeds tiny pigments of color measuring just 30 to 50 nanometres. The ALUBEAM silver is contrasted with AMG Designo Mystic White metallic in a bold design echoing the Mercedes-AMG logo. Inside, the boat features marine-grade upholstery that resembles the two-tone AMG Designo porcelain and white Nappa leather offered on the SLS AMG. Below deck the vessel features racing inspired materials and finishes, like a carbon fiber cooler and an alcantara suede headliner.

While many of the influences of the SLS AMG can be seen in the exterior paint work and interior, the true benefits of the inspiration can be found below the surface. With more than 100 innovations on display, the all new 46' Rider serves as a technology showcase for Cigarette.

Powered by a pair of Mercury Racing, 9 litre, 8 cylinder, twin turbocharged engines, each producing 1,350 horsepower the 46' AMG boat can hit a phenomenal top speed of 130 + mph. However it's not just the outright performance that's impressive. These engines require only around a third of the servicing of similar performance engines, and are relatively fuel efficient. The offset and staggered location of the engines helps to improve the balanced weight distribution of the boat, and also allow for a closer grouping of the propellors. This results in less drag and higher performance.
