Mustang Mach 40, a custom ’60s-flavored supercar, coming to Gran Turismo

- 0 коментара

The real trouble with the massive SEMA car customizers’ convetion in ⋆ is that impressive works tend to get overlooked by corporate cosplay and overchromed behemoths. Thankfully, the team behind Sony’s Gran Turismo video game managed to find a worthy candidate for their annual award and invitation to become an in-game ride — the Mustang Mach 40, a somewhat insane project to combine the looks of a 1969 Mach 1 ‘Stang with the parts of the mid-engine Ford GT. Built by Eckert Rod & Custom, “the goal was to create a what-if mid-engine concept car,” the firm says. That meant taking a 2006 Ford GT donor car and its 5.4-liter supercharged V-8, then stretching bodywork over the outside that could evoke the wide-mouth look of the classic Mach Total time from idea to rolling finish: Three years.

Underneath the back hatch, Eckert massaged the V-8 with a larger Whipple supercharger, a conversion to flex-fuel capability and the addition of a dash dial that can boost the engine from 650 hp to 800 hp. From here, the coders at Sony will scan the Mustang Mach 40 and turn it into a digital download for Gran Turismo. It’s a nice way to honor a handsome mix of something old with something new.

Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 : 1969

- 0 коментара

The SS trim and engine were deleted, and the 427 engine, cowl-induction hood, front disc brakes, a choice of heavy duty 4 speed transmissions or Turbo Hydra-matic, and a 4:10 posi axle were added. But instead of the regular iron-block and head L72 found in the dealer installed Camaros, the ZL1 sported aluminum heads and the first aluminum block ever made by Chevrolet. It shared the L88 aluminum head/iron block's engine rating of 430 bhp but made closer to 500 bhp -- making it probably the most powerful engine Chevrolet ever offered to the public. And the engine weighed just 500 pounds, the same as Chevy's 327 small block.

Briggs & Stratton Flyer : 1917

- 0 коментара

During our six-week excursion in Spain (and other parts of Europe) we have come across many unique stories from Barcelona and the surrounding "Pueblos", like L' Autrodrom De Terramar, Artes, and Automoviles Utilitarios S.A.'s PTV, to name a few, and one such find is this very rare 1917 Briggs & Stratton Flyer from Milwaukee Wisconsin (USA).

This was a very unexpected find. We had just left the AUSA factory after speaking with the folks there about the history of their PTV vehicle, when Antoni and Xavier told us about Jant Joan, and the collection of micro cars he had restored.

This vehicle is powered by a fifth wheel (that contains the motor) and when a lever (that appears like a shifter) is moved, it drops the rear wheel, which makes contact with the road and pushes the car.
In 1908, an informal partnership was formed between inventor Stephen F. Briggs and investor Harold M. Stratton.

From there, Briggs & Stratton progressed to manufacturing automobile parts. Some of the parts the Company produced for the automobile industry included locks, switches, and igniters. In 1910 Briggs & Stratton incorporated, and due to the growing demand for automobiles, starter switches became the early mainstay of the Company’s business.

This informal partnership flourished into the Briggs & Stratton Corporation. Within the initial partnership, Briggs was the inventor and Stratton was the investor. This partnership first ventured into the automobile manufacturing business with this 1917 Briggs & Stratton Flyer.
It was restored, and is currently located at Autos Retro near Barcelona, Spain.

Buick Electra : 1960

- 0 коментара

Prior to 1959, the Roadmaster and the Limited constituted the upper echelon of Buick's lineup.

For 1959, they were renamed the Electra and the Electra 225 respectively.
The Electra 225 nameplate was a nod to the car's overall length of 225 in (5,715 mm), earning it the street name "deuce and a quarter."

The Electra 225 Riviera was the top-line model and it shared its six window hardtop roofline with the Cadillac Fleetwood. Buick had been using the "Riviera" name to indicate a premium trimmed hardtop body style beginning with the 1949 model year.
A standard four-door hardtop and a two-door convertible were available, along with a stripped chassis of which 144 were built in 1959 and 1960.

Second generation.
1961-1964. The Electra, along with the LeSabre, was redesigned for 1961 with drastically shrunken fins.

Third generation.
1965-1970. All GM passenger vehicles received a major restyling in 1965. For 1965, Buick changed its marketing strategy and offering the Electra 225 in two trim levels, base and Custom.

Fourth generation.
1971-1976. All Electra 225s were hardtops in the 1971 to 1973 model years, eliminating the previous 4-door pillared sedan variant and the convertible. In 1974 Buick adopted GM's pillared coupe body and fitted it with the "Landau" option on the Electra Limited coupe.

Alfa Romeo 2600 Spider : 1963

- 0 коментара

The Alfa Romeo 2600 (series 106) was Alfa Romeo´s six-cylinder flagship produced from 1961 to 1968. It was the successor to the Alfa Romeo 2000.

It has become historically significant as the last Alfa Romeo to have been fitted with an inline six-cylinder engine having twin overhead camshafts. That had been the traditional Alfa Romeo engine configuration since the 1920s, but gave way to four-cylinder engines as the factory oriented its production towards more economical mass-produced car models after the Second World War.

The 2600 was introduced in the 1962 Geneva Motor Show, as a sedan with a factory-built body (2600 Berlina), a two-plus-two seater convertible with body by Carrozzeria Touring (2600 Spider), and a coupe with a body by Bertone (2600 Sprint).

A convertible based on the Sprint coupe was shown by Bertone in 1963. It was also named 2600 Sprint, but did not enter production. The 2600 SZ (Sprint Zagato) with fastback coupe bodywork by Zagato, and the limited-edition 2600 De Luxe with six-window sedan bodywork by OSI (Officine Stampaggi Industriale) were introduced three years later in 1965 at the Frankfurt Motor Show.

From a sales point of view, the 2600 models were not a success, despite deserved acclaim for that excellent engine. The poor sales were not only due to the elevated prices of the 2600 models. The cars did not compare well to contemporary products, including those of Alfa Romeo themselves.
The 2600 Spider had styling which was seen to be derivative of that of its smaller stablemate, the Giulietta Spider: certainly handsome, but lacking the smaller car's grace and balance.

First 1957 Cadillac Eldorado Biarritz sells for $649,000

- 0 коментара

One may indeed be the loneliest number, but being number one certainly has its advantages – up to half a million of them, if this past weekend’s sale of the very first 1957 Cadillac Eldorado Biarritz at $649,000 is any indication.

Assigned engine #000001, which makes it VIN #000001, the Biarritz also wears body #000001, painted a shade of green that Cadillac reportedly applied to the first production Cadillac of the year during the 1950s. Jim Remlinger, who consigned the Biarritz with the Hollywood Wheels Palm Beach Auction, said that he verified the combination of VIN and body number through Cadillac Historical Services, which provided a copy of the build sheet and the original title showing all three numbers.

Remlinger said he bought the car about two years ago and tore it down for a complete restoration, finding several non-production items on the car, including hand-fabricated moldings, some 1956 parts, and the word “sample” stamped in the frame. Unfortunately, his research never turned up who originally owned the car or any of its history up to about 1959.

The Biarritz and its hardtop equivalent, the Seville, debuted in 1956, but for 1957 Cadillac introduced the oftentimes polarizing chipmunk cheeks rear end and bumped the output of the dual-quad 365-cu.in. V-8 from 305 to 325hp. While the Eldorado Biarritz is generally considered to be the most valuable 1957 Cadillac, price guides generally assign perfectly restored examples a value between $150,000 and $250,000.

1969 Dodge Charger – Charger In A Barn

- 0 коментара

Wherever you live in the United States, chances are you’ve heard a story about some sort of classic car that has been sitting in a barn, garage, or back yard because the owner was tragically killed in the Vietnam War. And while these stories generally involve a parent or family member who is unwilling to sell the car because the attachment to their lost loved one, occasionally the car gets passed along and goes on to provide future owners with the same pleasure that the original owner enjoyed. Mark Stornant of Lansing, Michigan, tracked down this ’69 Charger R/T, after an acquaintance learned that he was restoring a similar Charger and convinced the owner he would take care of the car and give it a good home.

Purchased new in 1969, the original owner ordered this Charger R/T with the 440 Magnum engine and 727 TorqueFlite transmission. With black exterior paint, a white R/T stripe and white interior, we’re sure the first owner of this car made an impression during the two years he drove the car as his daily transportation. Unfortunately, he was killed during 1970 and the car was parked briefly before his parents decided to sell the car to a couple they knew. Using the car from 1970 until 1978 as a daily driver, the car succumbed to normal wear and tear as well as rust in the normal places thanks to the snowy Michigan winters. In 1978 the Charger was sold again to an acquaintance of Mark’s, and he and his brother had the car painted with an economical paint job.

Again, it’s not over the top, but this car was built to cruise! Gaps are nice, while the doors, hood and trunk close nicely. The big billet rally wheels at all four corners steal the show 18 in diameter, custom built for the car, and wrapped in Nitto NT555R high performance tires. An-Bu Yamaha XS650

- 0 коментара

Where to next for the custom motorcycle scene? Over the past ten years, raked-out choppers have faded away and ‘Brat Style’ bikes have dominated. The genre is named after the Tokyo-based workshop run by ‘Go’ Takamine, one of a handful of Japanese builders who took cheap commuter bikes and stripped them back to the basics, fitting slimmer seats and removing fenders in the process.
Call it neo-retro or new wave, it’s a look that we’re all familiar with these days. So what’s next? The increasing popularity of the tracker style is one pointer, but another comes from shops like An-Bu.

An-Bu has a stellar reputation in Japan, and its bikes are different to those we usually see in the west. The company has a strong house style; It’s based around asymmetrical fairings and a vibe that is part Mad Max, part Tokyo street culture. This XS650, built for the last Yokohama custom show, is a particularly eye-catching example.

The bike is running a no-frills S&S Super B carburetor (more commonly found on Harley Sportsters), raised compression and an overbore for extra capacity. The exhaust system, spectacularly kicked up at the back, is fully custom. The engine has been tuned for torque.

The sleek black fairing—an echo of racing motorcycles from the 1960s—is matched to a race-style seat unit, brutally truncated and sitting much further forward than you would expect. For the tank paint, An-Bu has selected a military theme. The camouflage-style paintjob is reminiscent of tiger stripes, hence the name of the bike, ‘Skull Tiger.’
An-Bu’s style is certainly arresting, and there’s a solid performance boost to match. A good direction for future custom builders, would you say?
